Mayor McClement to Present Proclamation Declaring August 18, 2012 “Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Bicycle Race Day”
Frederick, MD -- Mayor McClement will present a proclamation declaring August 18, 2012 as “Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Bicycle Race Day” in The City of Frederick at a press conference on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. The press conference will take place at 6:00 PM in front of Brewers Alley on North Market and will highlight the Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Bicycle racing event scheduled for Saturday, August 18, 2012.
“We are thrilled to host the Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Bicycle Race in our City, one of a handful of such races that take place around the world. Frederick is the ideal venue. We have a vibrant historic downtown area and an enthusiastic, bicycle friendly community. Bicycles have an extremely low impact on public infrastructure and their environmental footprint is relatively low. This event is a great and fun way to highlight the bike friendly nature of The City of Frederick.,” said Mayor Randy McClement.
"There will be 25 racers from all over the United States riding on these 19th century machines. With the historic backdrop of our beautiful downtown Frederick, this will make for an incredibly unique spectating event.,” said Eric Rhodes, who, along with his wife Jeanne, are Race Directors of The Clustered Spires High Wheel Race.
On Saturday, August 18th, the twenty-five high wheel cyclists are set to race through downtown Frederick in the Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Bicycle racing event.
The race is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM and will feature riders of antique or replicas of the high wheel bicycle, a bicycle popular in the late 19th century. Among these riders will be three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond.
Riders from across the United States, from as far away as Texas and Arizona, will be participating in what is being hailed as "The One and Only Penny Farthing race in the United States." The race will be a one-hour multi-lap race of high-wheels along a half-mile circuit in historic downtown Frederick, MD. It will be one of the only four known high wheel races in the world.
The event is organized by the Potomac Wheelmen and supported by the City of Frederick Bicycle Ad Hoc Committee and is being held in conjunction with the third annual Tour de Frederick Bicycle Event scheduled for August 17th through August 19th. Frederick's Brewer's Alley Restaurant and Bar is the race's proud main sponsor, and other local businesses including Frederick County Bank, Frederick Gorilla Magazine, Frederick Memorial Hospital, Riot Creative Imaging and the Gullo Law Firm have pledged their support for this event whose proceeds will benefit the Frederick Bicycle Coalition.
