TPB Approves Funding to Better Coordinate Transportation
and Land-use Planning in the Region
Projects focus on improving transportation access and integration with the built environment
Frederick, MD -- At yesterday’s monthly meeting, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) voted unanimously to approve nine projects aimed at better coordinating transportation and land-use planning in metropolitan Washington.
The latest round of TLC projects approved today included studies aimed at improving transit access to employment centers and affordable housing, determining the relationship between bike-sharing and parking requirements around developments, and improving bus stop safety and accessibility, among others.
This year marked the first time the TLC program has provided funding for the design phase of projects, awarding $80,000 to the City of Frederick to design a multi-use trail and path, bringing a transportation and recreation facility to nearby residential areas and new mixed-use and commercial developments. Ultimately this project will connect key transportation facilities to residential areas, employment and education corridors, as well as the largest commercial development in The City of Frederick.
Mayor Randy McClement said, “The City of Frederick continues to work to enhance alternate means of traversing around our town. This grant will provide funding for the design of a trail that includes a combination of bike lanes, sidewalk upgrades, and the development of a shared-use path which will provide access from residential areas to new mixed-use and commercial developments. This grant allows us to take the first step in designing that project and we truly appreciate the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Boards approval of these funds.”
“Our county is projected to experience a lot of growth over the next few decades,” said Paul Smith, TPB Member and Frederick County Commissioner. “This funding will help us concentrate that growth in more dense, urban areas rather than increase sprawl.”
"The City of Frederick is the recipient of the first of its kind design technical assistance grant from COG for design of a bike and pedestrian shared use path on East Street. The $80,000 grant will be used for design of a needed connection for pedestrians and bicyclists to MARC train and commercial areas." said Alderman Carol Krimm, The City of Frederick representative to the Transportation Planning Board at the Washington Council of Governments.
The design project will be overseen by TPB and City Staff, as well as the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee, Chaired by Marylyn Hinde with Aldermanic representation by Kelly Russell. The project is expected to being in October, with a completion time frame of 6 months.
