City to hold open house for transportation master plan release

FREDERICK_MAIN_LOGO_SEAL_BLUE

The City of Frederick is pleased to announce the release of the public draft of its first comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plan, Let’s Move, Frederick.

The City will be kicking off its public outreach with an open house on May 30 at 6:00 pm at the Municipal Annex, Room C, at 140 West Patrick Street.

The plan provides a vision for the City:

“The City of Frederick will be a community where bicycling and walking is comfortable, useful, safe, affordable, and accessible to all residents and visitors.”

The plan is available for download at the project website: www.cityoffrederick.com/ 1496/Comprehensive-Bicycle-Pedestrian-Plan

Let’s Move, Frederick includes:

  • 24 potential programs for the City to be involved with, including Bike to Work Day, bicycle giveaways, new marketing, safety efforts, and more
  • 24 miles of new sidewalk and upgrades to 26 intersections
  • 127 miles of bike lanes and trails, including off-street paths, protected bicycle lanes, shared streets, and more
  • Potential modifications to Frederick’s Land Management Code and overall Code
  • Potential options for how the City could take on additional responsibility for sidewalk and bikeway maintenance – and how much it might cost
  • Options for how to pay for and maintain new infrastructure
  • A Results-Based Management plan, which sets clear goals and deadlines for the City

Let’s Move, Frederick is a responds to the desires expressed by residents to create more bicycling routes, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, and better sidewalks. In a survey in preparation for this plan, people responded:

  • 67 percent of survey respondents want more on-street biking routes
  • 78 percent want more off-street biking routes
  • 69 percent said a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is appealing
  • 61 percent said a sidewalk is a desirable part of a neighborhood

This demand is reflected in City policies to promote bicycling and walking and give people more choices for how to move around the city. To understand how best to meet residents’ needs, Let’s Move, Frederick holistically examines where the City has been, where it is today, and where it needs to be in order to implement the City’s transportation goals. Drawing on the latest research and best practices from peer cities around the region, country, and the world, the Plan looks at five factors influencing walking and bicycling:

  • Environment: Frederick’s physical landscape and climate
  • Attitude: The culture surrounding walking and bicycling
  • Infrastructure: The sidewalks, bike lanes, and paths
  • Land Use: Frederick’s rules about where homes, shops, offices, etc., can be located
  • Parking: Frederick’s rules about car parking

Each item in Let’s Move, Frederick – programs, projects, and policies – are designed to align Frederick with resident requests and City transportation and environmental policies.

Residents are invited to the Open House on May 30 at 6 pm at the Municipal Annex, Room C, at 140 West Patrick Street to meet with other residents and City staff for a round-table discussion and workshop to engage and share feedback.
