City of Frederick HPC to host Digging Local archeology event

Antler and Large Pot Sherds1

To recognize Maryland Archeology Month in April, the City of Frederick’s Historic Preservation Commission is excited to host its third Digging Local event on Wednesday April 19, 2023 at the C. Burr Artz Public Library Community Room at 6 p.m. This event allows the public exclusive access to local archeological investigations. This year, the City is highlighting the exciting research and excavation at the Biggs Ford prehistoric village in Frederick.

Dr. Matthew McKnight, the Chief Archeologist at the Maryland Historical Trust, will be highlighting the 2013-2015 excavation. Researchers were initially expecting to find features and artifacts dating from the Late Woodland period, but soon discovered evidence of early European trade goods suggesting a Native American presence that endured on the landscape much longer than presumed. This presentation will provide context on a dynamic landscape inhabited by multiple Native groups and frequented by European traders.

Dr. Lauren Lippiello, Assistant Professor of Global Studies at Frederick Community College, will be speaking about her ongoing efforts to display and interpret the unique finds at Frederick Community College.

This event is a partnership between the C. Burr Public Artz Library and the Monocacy Archeological Society.
