The Frederick Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit has arrested the person responsible for an August arson that left one animal dead
On 08-24-2022, the Frederick Police Department responded to a structure fire at 90 Waverley Drive, in Frederick City. There were no persons inside the apartment at the time; however, there was one dog that succumbed to injuries consistent with smoke inhalation.
Through evidence and information obtained through the investigation, it was determined the fire was fueled by an accelerant and the cause of the fire was arson. The suspect in this case, Darryl Deshun Cooper, was determined to be an occupant of the apartment but had been asked to leave shortly before the fire due to a conflict with other renters.
On 01-20-2023, this investigation was presented to the Grand Jury for Frederick County and indictments were issued, charging Cooper with the following:
- Arson – 1st Degree
- Aggravated Cruelty to Animal
- Animal Cruelty
- Reckless Endangerment (x4)
Cooper was located and arrested on March 15, 2023, by detectives of the Major Crimes Unit.
