The Frederick Police Department has identified and arrested two men who committed a commercial robbery.
On July 22, 2022, at approximately 12:30 a.m., the Frederick Police responded to a convenience store in the 200 Block of Amber Drive.
Officers from the Frederick Police Department and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly and started gathering suspect’s information from a victim and witness. Units quickly set up a perimeter and started to canvass for the suspects.
Deputy Smith, of Frederick County Sheriffs Office, observed a suspicious vehicle that was occupied with two individuals that fit the description of the robbery suspects. The vehicle was leaving from the immediate area within minutes of the robbery being reported to 911. At approximately 12:35 a.m., deputies and officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle approximately one mile from the location of the robbery.
Mr. Markel Demar Lyles-Smith, 24, was found in possession of the following:
• 9mm black Beretta 92-FS handgun
• 45 grams of crack cocaine
An investigation determined Lyles-Smith and Jaleiqk Cortez Onley, 20, were dropped off by a female near the convenience store where she was told to wait and they were going to purchase marijuana for her. Lyles-Smith and Onley then committed the armed robbery with the handgun and fled back to the vehicle.

Lyles-Smith and Olney both appeared in front of the district court commissioner where they were held without bond.
This investigation was a coordinated effort between the Frederick Police Department, the Frederick County States Attorney’s Office, and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
