City invites public to share thoughts for East Street redesign

The City of Frederick is undergoing a planning study to determine a future design for East Street and is seeking input from residents and businesses. The first public information session will be Monday, Feb. 28 at 6 pm, on Channel 99 and YouTube.

The City has also launched a project page and accompanying survey at tinyurl.com/eastredesign to get feedback.

The first public information session will be interactive, with live surveys, call-in opportunities, and the ability to make comments on our Channel 99 webpage. Our consultant will give a presentation to the public on its initial findings and some of the opportunities for the corridor. Our team will be listening closely to what residents, workers, and business owners have to say about this important corridor and how it might be able to serve the city better.

East Street, one of Frederick’s original streets, hosts an array of industries, stores, homes, and parks along its length. Over 4,000 jobs are within one block of East, and it is one of the primary gateways into downtown. However, it does not always serve its users well, with missing or narrow sidewalks, little accommodation for bicyclists, and a configuration that may not fit the amount of vehicle traffic it carries.

This redesign study, funded by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board and led by the design group Kittelson & Associates, will harmonize past studies to determine ways East Street could be better designed for purpose as a freight, commercial, and travel corridor that works for all its users, whether driving through, walking along, or running a business.

The City wants anyone interested to tune in during the information session to hear share their thoughts on ideas and proposals for the corridor.

Please contact David Edmondson, Transportation Planner, at dedmondson@cityoffrederickmd.gov, if you have any questions.
