High Wheel Race Scheduled For August 18th

Frederick, MD – The unique high wheel bicycle racers are coming to The City of Frederick! On Saturday, August 18, 2012, the Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Bicycle racing event will feature 24 high wheel cyclists in a one-hour multi-lap race through the historic streets of downtown Frederick. Riders of antique or replicas of the high wheel bicycle will participate in the only bike race of its kind in the United States and only one of four in the world!

The race begins at 4:00PM in front of the event’s title sponsor Brewer’s Alley Restaurant and Bar. Other local sponsors include Fredrick County Bank, Gorilla Magazine, Frederick Memorial Hospital, Riot Creative Imaging, and the Gullo Lawfirm. Proceeds from the race benefit the Frederick Bicycle Coalition.

The City of Frederick will proudly host the country’s first race of its kind for riders of antique or replicas of high wheel bicycles which were popular in the late 19th century. Organized by the Potomac Wheelmen and supported by The City of Frederick Bicycle Ad Hoc Committee, this inaugural event will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Tour de Frederick Bicycle Event scheduled for August 17th through the 19th. Famed Greg LeMond, 3 time winner and first American to win the Tour de France, will be on hand to celebrate the many events planned to celebrate cycling in Frederick.

Mayor Randy McClement said, “We are very excited to have the opportunity to host the Frederick Clustered Spires High Wheel Race. The old and unique form of bicycle racing is one more addition to the many wonderful events citizens and visitors can enjoy here. The City of Frederick is very committed to cycling and the many great benefits from this sport. Our Bicycle Ad Hoc Committee is tireless in their work to find opportunities to further enhance our “bicycle friendly” efforts.”

Members of the Potomac Wheelmen will be available to provide additional information and demonstrate the high wheel bicycle during the First Saturdays in Downtown Frederick on July 7th and August 4th underneath the pergola at the corner of Market and the Carroll Creek Linear Park.
