Maryland National Guard to Aid Frederick Community Action Agency

To support the expanded efforts of the Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA), The City of Frederick is announcing the arrival of the Maryland National Guard (MDNG) tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21, 2020. Six soldiers will be joining FCAA on a humanitarian mission to support the preparation and dissemination of food and hygiene products to vulnerable residents in Frederick. The soldiers will be serving FCAA for the remainder of the week. Additional support efforts may also begin as needs arise in the City.

“During this public health crisis, we have areas of need in our City, and the National Guard is filling vital areas for us. We are thankful for the service of the Maryland National Guard, as well as our first responders and others who are continuing to aid our community,” shared Mayor Michael O’Connor.

Over the last month, FCAA has been actively monitoring and responding to the impact of COVID-19 to ensure all populations are cared for during this public health crisis. The soup kitchen is operating in a carryout format and is serving 150 meals each night. Clients who come to the soup kitchen also receive a bag that includes a mask, thermometer, and hygiene products to monitor and protect their health. The Foodbank is operating Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 2 PM-4 PM. In collaboration with the Salvation Army, FCAA mobilized its Food Bank to serve local seniors and households. Food bags are currently being delivered to Taney Village and Catoctin Manor and through food drops with the Asian American Center of Frederick and the Spanish Speaking Community of Maryland.

Janet Jones, Acting Director of FCAA, is glad MDNG will be joining her operation. “We are working hard to meet the growing needs of our clients during this pandemic. The Maryland National Guard here will be a great addition to our staff as we continue to expand and adjust our services to meet the needs of our community.”

More than 2,000 Maryland National Guard members are activated to support Maryland’s response to COVID-19. The MDNG is working in close coordination with the many agencies to support civil authorities to augment civil agency capabilities. MDNG capabilities include medical augmentation, transportation support food distribution, and more.
