‘Flame of Hope’ Arrives in Frederick!
Frederick Law Enforcement Officers Participate in Statewide Torch Run Relay as Show of Support for the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games
Maryland Torch Run Celebrates over 25 Years of Success
Each year, law enforcement officers from across the state raise money for Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) by participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Since 1986, when the Maryland Torch Run began, it has grown consistently every year.
On June 7, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., runners and bikers from Frederick County’s Law Enforcement community as well as athletes from the Frederick County Chapter of the Special Olympics will convene at the William R. Talley Recreation Center located at 121 N. Bentz St. for the reading of the Proclamation of Special Olympics Week. Subsequently, they will be participating in Frederick County’s leg of the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Relay. Participants will be running and/or biking a 3.1-mile course through historic Frederick.
The MD Torch Run Relay involves more than 2,000 law enforcement officers from around the state who take part in a 600-mile, one-week torch relay to pass the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" across Maryland. All of the relays will converge in Towson for the lighting of the cauldron during the 2012 SOMD Summer Games Opening Ceremonies.
We would like to extend this invitation to the public and the press to attend the reading of the proclamation and participate in the run/ride/walk to show your support for the Special Olympics. Funds are raised by the sale of T-Shirts and hats at a nominal cost of $10. All proceeds go directly to the Maryland, Special Olympics.
So, why not skip your morning or evening run and join us in supporting this worthwhile cause. If you are interested in participating please meet us at the William R. Talley Recreation Center located at 121 N. Bentz St. on June 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.. Please contact Sgt. Wade Brown or Officer Michelle Cassady for further information.
