Frederick Police Identify and Charge Stabbing Suspect
FREDERICK, MD – On Sunday, September 8, 2019, at 9:21 p.m., Officer First Class Grant Smith of the Frederick Police Department was patrolling the downtown area. A bystander flagged him down in the 1st block of South Market Street near Carroll Creek. A witness told OFC Smith that a man had just been stabbed. OFC Smith located the victim, and emergency medical personnel administered first aid. Medical personnel transported the victim to a trauma center for treatment for a substantial laceration to his back. The victim has since been treated and released.
Detective Matt Irons arrived at the scene to conduct the investigation. Information gathered by OFC Smith, as well as additional witness interviews and investigation by Detective Irons produced sufficient evidence to identify the suspect as Kevin Ryan Sassaman, 35, of no fixed address. The District Court Commissioner has issued an arrest warrant charging Mr. Sassaman with the following offenses:
