Frederick Community Action Agency Announces Events for National Community Action Month
Frederick, MD -- The month of May has been designated as National Community Action Month by the National Community Action Partnership, which represents over 1,100 Community Action Agencies nationwide. The Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA) will be recognizing National Community Action Month through the following special events and activities:
On May 16, 2012, Marriott Computing and Network Center employees will celebrate Spirit to Serve Our Communities Day by volunteering time to the Foodbank, Soup Kitchen, and Transitional Shelter programs of the FCAA. Marriott employees will be sorting food and cleaning in the Foodbank; performing maintenance and landscaping projects in and around the Transitional Shelter; and preparing an evening meal for 150 people that will be served later that day in the Soup Kitchen.
This effort is part of Marriott International’s worldwide community outreach initiative where 137,000 employees from more than 3,500 lodging properties in 70 countries to deliver community service through volunteerism. Business leaders from all Marriott brands and businesses have pledged to dedicate a day to helping others during the third week of May.
Diane Iniguez, Director of Storage Engineering at Marriott’s data center said, “By giving associates the opportunity to give back to their local areas, we carry on our company’s eighty-one year history and deep commitment to community involvement. We want to make Frederick, Maryland and every community where Marriott operates, a better place to live and work.”
On May 23, 2012, Mayor Randy McClement will attend a meeting of the Board of Directors of the FCAA and present City Certificates of Appreciation to the dedicated citizens that volunteer to serve on the FCAA’s Board of Directors. Following the presentation, the Mayor will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. at the FCAA, primarily to announce plans for the Summer Food Service Program, which will operate Monday through Friday from June 11 through August 24, 2012 (except for July 4, 2012). Last summer, the FCAA’s Summer Food Service Program served a total of 18,205 meals to lower-income children and youth, children who would normally qualify for free- or reduced-priced meals while in school, at nine (9) different feeding sites throughout Frederick and Walkersville. Mayor McClement and FCAA staff will present operational plans for the summer of 2012.
Lastly, on May 31, 2012, trustees and staff from the Ausherman Family Foundation will tour the School-Based Health Center located at Hillcrest Elementary School in Frederick. The Ausherman Family Foundation has been a major sponsor of the School-Based Health Center, which provides primary health care and related services to students from Hillcrest, Waverley, and Lincoln Elementary Schools. The School-Based Health Center is operated by the Frederick Community Action Agency in partnership with Frederick County Public Schools.
