Statement from Mayor Randy McClement Regarding G-8 Summit, May 18th and 19th

_
Frederick, MD -- The G-8 Summit will be held in the northern part of Frederick County on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th. On behalf of the Board of Aldermen and the citizens of this City, I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to the leaders of the leading economies who will be attending the G-8 Summit and to those from around the world who will be visiting our City. It is always my hope that visitors will see what makes our City of Frederick a great place to live, work, learn, and play.

We also welcome people who want to peacefully assemble to express their political views. It is our desire that visitors to this wonderful City respect our City and our residents and businesses.

Historically, the G-8 Summit draws the interest of community activists. We have some information to suggest that Frederick will be a location for demonstrators, the Frederick Police Department and other city agencies along with the Federal, State, and Local entities are working to prepare for this event and to address any potential.

As Mayor of The City of Frederick, I want to reassure our community that a proactive approach has been taken to provide a safe and peaceful atmosphere and to prevent and/or reduce unsafe conditions during events occurring in the City.

The Frederick Police Department, in collaboration with authorities from multiple agencies on the Federal, State, and Local levels, have developed operation plans that will assist in providing public services to residents and visitors.

Just as the City has prepared, I am asking citizens to help the community prepare for more than the usual number of visitors to The City of Frederick. We encourage residents and visitors to bring in or secure items that could be easily moved and keep homes, outbuildings and cars locked. DO NOT hesitate to report ANY suspicious or criminal behavior to the police immediately.

Local Law Enforcement numbers for your convenience are:

• The Frederick Police Department non-emergency number at 301.600.2100
• The Frederick County Sheriff’s 24 Hour Main Line at 301.600.1046
• As always, “If you see something, say something” – report all suspicious activity to local law enforcement or call 9-1-1.

The health and safety of our citizens and visitors are our primary concern.

Community partners will respond to inquiries at an Information Center that will be operational during the G-8 Summit. Contact the Information Center by calling 301-600-3000 or email jic@frederickCountyMD.gov
