POLICE WARN COMMUNITY OF KIDNAPPING SCAM
FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Police Department would like to warn the community of a telephone scam. Victims have reported receiving phone calls advising that a family member was involved in an accident, often times saying the family member hit their child with a car. They say that they have kidnapped that family member and demand money for the safe return.
The suspects are “spoofing” the number they are calling from, making the scam to appear realistic. Spoofing is the process of changing the caller ID to impersonate a local number.
As a general reminder please never give out any personal information such as family member names, phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers, etc. Please contact the police if you receive a phone call related to the telephone scam.
