The Frederick Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit arrested a Frederick man with four (4) outstanding warrants, along with a female for harboring a fugitive
On 01-21-2017, members of the Frederick Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit made contact with and arrested John Leroy Nichols, Jr in the 1600 block of Rosemont Avenue, in Frederick City. Nichols had four outstanding warrants through the Frederick Police Department and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
The warrant from the Frederick Police Department stemmed from an incident that occurred on 11-29-2016. During this investigation, it was found Nichols entered the Sheetz Convenient Store, located at 1600 Rosemont Avenue, with a bag in his hand. Nichols acted disorderly in the bathroom of the Sheetz, prompting employees to call for police assistance. When police officers arrived, Nichols was contacted outside of the store, but no longer had the bag in his possession. Shortly after, the same bag Nichols was initially carrying into the men’s bathroom was located by an employee, behind the toilet. Inside of the bag were personal items linking Nichols to the bag, along with a loaded revolver handgun.
As the investigation continued, it was found Nichols was a convicted felon and was unable to possess firearms. Office First Class Cosgray, of the Frederick Police Department, later applied for charges against Nichols for the illegal possession of the firearm. Nichols was not arrested on scene being the handgun was located after Nichols was initially contacted by police officers outside of the Sheetz and had subsequently been released.
Over the past several weeks, officers were able to determine Nichols was living with a female at an address in the 500 block of Lee Place. The female was identified as, Angela Mae Nichols. Angela was contacted multiple times as officers attempted to locate John Nichols; however, Angela would not allow officers to enter her residence to search for him, and denied knowledge of his whereabouts. Angela was advised by multiple officers that Nichols had an active felony arrest warrant and that it was against the law to harbor him.
When Nichols was taken into custody, it was determined both Nichols and Angela exited out of the same residence. In addition, both Nichols and Angela were together when Nichols was arrested.
While searching Nichols incident to arrest, a syringe was located on his person. The arresting officers knew this syringe to be related to the paraphernalia one would use to inject a controlled dangerous substance into their body.
Angela Nichols was also placed under arrest at this time for harboring a fugitive. During a search of Angela and her belongings, a syringe and a plastic straw with heroin residue were located.
John Nichols and Angela Nichols were transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.
