The Frederick Police Department’s Street Crimes Team arrested two Frederick men after observing a drug transaction
On 03-16-2016, officers of the Frederick Police Department’s Street Crimes Team observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Appleton Place and Stillmeadow Place, in Frederick City.
During the observation of the vehicle, there came a time when the driver exited the vehicle and met with another male. The officer then observed the driver of the vehicle conduct a hand to hand drug transaction with this person. Both men then quickly parted ways.
The buyer from the transaction was contacted and arrested. During the process of this arrest, the suspect attempted to flee on foot and assaulted a police officer by intentionally closing an apartment door on the officer and then applying pressure to the door as the officer’s body was caught in-between the door and doorframe. This person was identified as, Jonathan Araya-Munoz. When Araya-Munoz was arrested, two baggies of powder cocaine were located on his person.
The dealer from the transaction was later located and arrested. This person was then identified as, Dante Leroy Powell.
It should be noted Araya-Munoz was wanted by the Frederick Police Department at the time of his arrest in reference to a first degree assault of another individual.
The arrest warrant stemmed from an incident that occurred on 10-23-2015. During this incident it was reported Araya-Munoz exited a wood line in the area of 1086 Greenwall Place and attacked another person with a knife. During the assault, Araya-Munoz punched and bit the victim multiple times in the area of his face, and attempted to stab the victim, resulting in a laceration to the victim’s hand. Through the investigation it was found Araya-Munoz and the victim knew each other. Araya-Munoz could not be located on the day of the assault, resulting in the arrest warrant.
Araya-Munoz and Powell were transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.
The arresting officer sustained minor injuries as a result of being struck by the door during the arrest of Araya-Munoz and did not require medical attention.
