Stream-Link Education Assist City in Tree Planting Project
Frederick, MD – October 22, 2015 Stream-Link Education , a local organization that organizes and leads tree plantings with local community members, organizations and businesses, recently led a tree planting project in Rivermist Park in The City of Frederick.
On October 10th and 17th, over 50 volunteers planted 500 trees along the Monocacy River in Rivermist Park. The site, selected by Tom Rippeon, Arborist for The City of Frederick, was chosen for restoration because of its unique characteristics. Japanese Hops, an invasive plant species found growing on this site has already caused native trees to die.
Volunteers from Stream-Link Education cleared the area of the Japanese Hops and planted the 50 native trees. Over time, the trees planted will create a canopy of shade; a condition in which the Hops can not survive. This site is also known to endure extreme flooding which has drastic effects on water quality.
“I would like to thank Stream-Link Education for reaching out to The City of Frederick to assist with this project which will ultimately help the City to reach our tree canopy goal. We are very fortunate to have a volunteer group that is so ready, willing and able to work with us. This group has contributed over the years for the City’s current needs for urban tree cover” said Tom Rippeon.
The goals of this project are to plant native trees that will, over time, rid the site of Japanese Hops through the development of a tree canopy, stabilize the soil from erosion, create a more diverse wildlife habitat, and educate and engage the community.
This project was funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust and is in partnership with Land and Cultural Preservation Fund. Stream-Link Education is dedicated to maintenance and will maintain the site for three years.
