Maryland women are encouraged to take advantage of health care benefits for breast cancer screening.

FREDERICK, MD -- Newly released U.S. Census Bureau data reports 92.1 percent of Marylanders, as of 2014, are now insured through private or public insurance coverage sources. Most health insurance plans offered within the state of Maryland provide complete coverage of preventive health screenings, such as breast cancer screening. However, it is estimated that only 56 percent of Maryland women forty years and older have had breast cancer screening with clinical breast exam and mammogram within the past year.

It is essential to the health of Maryland women that they take advantage of the cancer screening services that they have available to them through health insurance coverage.

“I see clients at the health department who have insurance but really don’t know what their insurance benefits can pay for. I continue to encourage these women to reach out to their insurance companies and read their Summary of Benefits and Coverage so they can see that they can get a mammogram at zero cost to them. They should be taking advantage of these services!” states Beth Mowrey Program Administrator for the Frederick County Health Department Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program.

In Maryland, if a woman has health insurance, but it will not pay for all of the breast cancer tests she needs or if she has no health insurance at all, she may be eligible for screening through the Frederick County Health Department of the Maryland Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.
