AMERICORPS MEMBER NEEDED FOR FULL-TIME SERVICE
AT THE FREDERICK COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY

FREDERICK, MARYLAND. The Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA), in partnership with Frostburg State University and the Corporation for National Service, is pleased to announce the availability of an opening for a full-time AmeriCorps Member to serve at the FCAA. Specifically the AmeriCorps member will serve as an Outreach Worker and will be responsible for performing client intakes, conducting initial assessments, scheduling appointments, answering calls about available services, and referring clients to other service agencies and resources. This is a day shift position and the AmeriCorps member will work Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

AmeriCorps is a national service program sponsored by the Corporation for National Service in cooperation with State governments, intermediary organizations, and service sites. Members receive a living allowance stipend of $12,530 for a one-year (1,700 hour) full-time commitment of service. Health care coverage, deferment of student loans, training, and other benefits are available. Full-time members also receive a Segal Educational Award of $5,730 after the completion of 1,700 hours of service. Perhaps most importantly, members gain invaluable “hands-on” experience by assisting people and communities that are in need of help.

Through a wide array of programs and services, the FCAA provides food, shelter, medical care, housing, transportation, and other forms of assistance to families and individuals that are lower-income or homeless. Started in 1968, the FCAA is sponsored by the City of Frederick and Friends for Neighborhood Progress, Inc. Mike Spurrier, Director of the FCAA began his career by serving as a VISTA Volunteer (VISTA is an AmeriCorps Program) in a 13-bed homeless shelter in Vermont. Spurrier stated, “I didn’t fully appreciate at the time what a great learning experience I was gaining through AmeriCorps VISTA. My year of service in VISTA opened up a world of human service possibilities that I never knew existed.”
