Frederick Airport Receives $4 Million Grant
Frederick, MD August 12, 2015: The City of Frederick has been awarded a $4,137,300 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the removal of obstructions at the Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK). That announcement came today from
U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski together with U.S. Representative John Delaney.
The funding from the grant will go towards the Bailes Lane demolition, obstruction removal, and wild life hazard assessment.
“This grant allows us to proceed with the expansion of Frederick Municipal Airport which will certainly increase usage. FDK is a general aviation airport that plays a key role in the economy of the City, the County and the State of Maryland,” said Mayor Randy McClement.
Currently Bailes Lane, an abandoned road near the airport, is in the way of this future expansion. In order to adhere to FAA safety standards the road and its buildings must be demolished. This demolition project is one part of the larger runway extension project.
The existing buildings on Bailes Lane present obstructions to navigable airspace if they remain. Removal of the buildings will alleviate that safety concern.
Over the next several years, FDK would like to improve its existing infrastructure by extending the run ends of 5 and 23, which can be used for landing if needed, along with the parallel taxiway to runway 5-23. This expansion work will open up the airport to wider variety of business aircraft and open areas for more corporate hangar development. The projects will also bring Frederick Municipal Airport into full FAA safety standards for runway 5-23 and its parallel taxiway.
