In July 2015, the Frederick Police Department's Drug Enforcement Unit received information regarding the illegal distribution of CDS in Frederick City. During the investigation suppliers were identified, one of which was found to be illegally manufacturing and selling AR-15 assault rifles. FPD Drug Enforcement Officers and Agents from the Homeland Security Investigations were able to infiltrate the network using an undercover officer. During the month long investigation the undercover FPD officer was able to purchase two illegally manufactured AR-15 assault rifles. The officers determined the suspect was legally purchasing AR-15 rifle parts, assembling them, and effectively manufacturing assault weapons without serial numbers that were untraceable – and then illegally selling them to individuals. In addition to the assault weapons, the undercover officer was also able to make multiple purchases of marijuana from Schumaker.
A search and seizure warrant was then conducted at a home on Amy's Ter, Mount Airy, Maryland, in which the following was recovered from the location.
-$3,600 U.S. Currency
-Approximately one pound of marijuana with a street value of $3600
-homemade suppressors for firearms
-multiple smoke projectiles
-30 rd handgun magazines
-28 firearms including the two purchased during the investigation
-assault rifle manufacturing equipment
-multiple body armor vests
Investigators were later able to locate and identify the supplier from which the pound of marijuana originated. It was determined during the investigation that the supplier was trafficking the marijuana supply into Frederick County, Maryland from New York. A subsequent search warrant was executed at the supplier’s house which was located on Woodville Rd, Mt Airy MD. At that location three more assault rifles, a small amount of marijuana, bath salts, scheduled prescription pills, and approximately $4500 in cash were seized.
