Hargis to Assume Post This Month

Frederick, MD - Thursday, July 16, 2015: Mayor McClement held a press conference this morning to announce the appointment of Edward G. Hargis as the new Chief of Police for the Frederick Police Department. Chief Hargis will take command on Monday, July 27.
“Chief Edward Hargis comes to us with an impressive record in policing. He has thirty-two years of experience in law enforcement, serving in a wide variety of positions throughout his career from Police Dispatcher to Police Chief,” said Mayor McClement. “He has been the Chief of Police in Portsmouth, Virginia for the last six years where he focused on crime reduction and enhancing community engagement.”

The Mayor also offered praise for the Acting Chief of Police, Captain Patrick Grossman, saying “I have been impressed with his day-to-day management of the Department as well as his emergency management skills. Captain Grossman is an extremely valuable asset to the Frederick Police Department and to the City. I would also like to thank all of the men and women of the Frederick Police Department. They have all stepped up during this transitional time and worked to make this process seamless. For that, I am incredibly proud and grateful.”

Chief Hargis thanked the Mayor and Board of Aldermen for this opportunity and said “Today’s law enforcement agencies must make every effort to develop trust and transparency with our citizens and I will continue with the Frederick Police Departments tradition of providing great customer service and continue to build onto our already established community relationships.” Hargis also acknowledged the work ahead of him, saying “I know that over the next several months, I will have to live, work and sleep Frederick. I am committed to the city, our citizens; our officers and our civilian support staff.”
