Frederick, MD – Thursday, July 9, 2015: The City of Frederick will host an informational Workshop to discuss the Emerald Ash Borer, a pest that attacks and kills Ash trees and has been found in the City. The Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, July 29 at 7pm in the Municipal Annex building at 140 W. Patrick Street. The meeting will include a presentation by Tom Lupp, Entomologist with the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Representatives from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be on hand as well as Tom Rippeon, Arborist for The City of Frederick.

“Frederick is beautiful in part because of the many established trees that line our streets,” said Mayor Randy McClement. “The Emerald Ash Borer will force the City to remove many of our Ash trees. I know residents will be upset when they see our DPW staff removing trees in the City Right of Way. That’s why I felt it was important to present this information and explain the situation to our residents.”

City Ash Tree Inventory:
Currently, there are 587 Ash trees in the City Right of Way (“Street Trees”) which is 6.15% of the City’s total street tree inventory. This is a relatively small percentage, but some neighborhoods may see a big impact. There are 152 Ash trees in City Parks; this is less than 1 Ash trees per 3 acres. The City predicts the impact on City parks to be low due to the diversity and the small inventory of Ash trees.
