Watershed Volunteer Cleanup Day Huge Success

Frederick, MD – April 21, 2015: On Saturday, April 18th more than 50 volunteers participated in the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup and tree planting as part of the activities planned for Earth Month 2015.

Volunteers from the Golden Mile Alliance, Friends of Waterford Park, Friends of Frederick County, Streamlink, The City of Frederick Green Initiatives Team and Mount St. Mary’s University students comprised the energetic group.

The cleanup involved trash pickup and invasive plant/shrub removal in the area along Rock Creek behind the Home Depot on Route 40. In addition, 19 Streamlink volunteers planted 125 trees along Rock Creek at Old Camp Road.

Jenny Willoughby, Sustainability Manager for The City of Frederick, said the group collected over 50 bags of trash totaling 1,060 pounds, four shopping carts and a variety of miscellaneous items. A massive pile of invasive vines and shrubs were collected to make way for native plants.

Earth Month activities will culminate on Saturday, April 25th with Ms. Willoughby leading a Notable Trees of Frederick Walking Tour around the City to point out notable trees, discuss the future of Frederick’s Urban Forest, and how residents can help. The three-mile loop tour begins at 10:00 AM in front of Brewers Alley. This activity is free and open to the public with no registration necessary.
