To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, Mayor Randy McClement joined over 2,228 mayors across the nation in the third-annual Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service.

Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service
Local Volunteers Recognized

Frederick, MD – April 2, 2015: To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, Mayor Randy McClement joined over 2,228 mayors across the nation in the third-annual Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service.

At the April 1st Workshop Meeting, Mayor McClement recognized 18 ASTAR! AmeriCorps members and the Project Director of RSVP, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, scheduled to launch July 1st.

“Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service is a wonderful opportunity to publicly recognize and thank volunteers for their service to others. What they accomplish in their work is most impressive to say the least.” said Mayor McClement. “Volunteer service is the greatest and most appreciated gift you can give to your community.”

Recognized for national volunteer service are:
• Carol Haag – Project Director of RSVP, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

• Taylor Lindard – United Way
• Ashley Rose Bennett – Seeds of Life
• Jessica Paguiriga – Department of Aging
• Sarah Gross – Housing Authority

ASTAR! in Western Maryland is a Maryland AmeriCorps program funded by the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism and the Corporation for National Community Service. Since 1994 ASTAR has been serving the western Maryland region as an AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps members though ASTAR are charged with providing direct service in the focus areas of Education (Academic and Student Engagement), Healthy Futures (reducing hunger, healthy options, building community gardens, providing health care information and assistance, providing translation services, food security, housing and shelter to name a few) and Building Capacity through volunteer generation and management.

RSVP is one of the largest volunteer efforts in the nation. The program engages people 55 and over in a diverse range of volunteer activities that address critical community needs. They serve in a wide range of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and faith-based groups.

The Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the National League of Cities, and Cities of Service and is officially celebrated on April 7, 2015.
