MEDIA RELEASE

City Receives Update on COPS Grant

Frederick, MD January 27, 2015: The City of Frederick has received notification that the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, has administratively withdrawn the COPS Hiring Program Grant. On December 18, 2014, the City notified the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) that although the supporting documentation was correct, there appeared to be a clerical error in the narrative portion of the application. The corrected application was then reviewed and it was determined that the City of Frederick has scored significantly lower on the funding list.
Although unfortunate, the declination letter stated, “…it is best that this error was identified early, and that your agency proactively made our office aware…” Withdrawing the Frederick Police Department from this particular grant does not preclude participation in future COPS grant funding opportunities.
Acting Chief Patrick Grossman stated, “Although we are disappointed, we will continue our aggressive policing strategy. We will continue to develop effective deployment strategies based on up to date intelligence and community participation. We will continue to fight crime and fear of crime through a creative problem solving approach. There will not be a decline in police related services and we continue to strive to improve overall efficiencies within the Department.”
