Serious traffic accident occurred in the 600 block of N. Market St.
At approximately 12:00 pm today, officers of the Frederick Police Department responded to a traffic accident with injuries in 600 block of North Market St. Upon arrival of police and fire units, it was discovered that a collision between a Chevy Avalanche truck and a Hyundai Elantra passenger car had occurred.
Initial investigation revealed that the truck had been traveling northbound on North Market St. and the passenger car was traveling eastbound on East 6th St. The collision occurred in the intersection. After the initial collision, the passenger car then struck a city light pole, knocking it from its base.
As a result of the collision, two female occupants were initially trapped inside the Hyundai and had to be extricated from the car by units of Frederick County Fire/Rescue. They were both flown to R. Cowley Shock Trauma in Baltimore by MSP helicopter. It was later confirmed that they were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The male operator of the truck did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.
The ensuing investigation by police traffic accident reconstructionists caused North Market St. and East and West 6th Streets to be closed for approximately 4 hours. The streets were reopened at 4:15 pm.
The accident remains under investigation.
