On 11/19/14 a Frederick Police Department officer successfully administered Naloxone to reverse the effects of an Opioid related overdose. OFC Gregory Santangelo responded to 1000 Heather Ridge Drive for a report of an overdose. He was contacted by the caller who advised her friend overdosed on heroin. OFC Santangelo observed the victim’s condition was consistent with an opioid overdose. OFC Santangelo treated the woman in accordance with his Naloxone training received from the Frederick County Health Department and administered Naloxone at 3:30 pm. After approximately two minutes the victim became conscious. Frederick County EMS personnel arrived and the victim was transported and treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

The Frederick Police Department received overdose response training from the Frederick County Health Department. Initially 12 officers were trained and equipped with Naloxone. This is the second use and reversal of an overdose since this program began in July 2014. The Frederick Police Department is working with the Frederick County Health Department to expand the program and issue Naloxone to all street level officers. Frederick Police officers completed the training requirement in September 2014 during in-service training and funding for additional Naloxone Kits has been obtained in partnership with the Frederick County Health Department.

Frederick County Health Department Overdose Response training is available free of charge to the public. The training certifies them to possess, administer and receive a prescription for Naloxone; for further information contact Rachel Barber, RN at 301-600-3459.
