The Frederick Police Department has recently received several reports of a telephone scam involving customers of Potomac Edison. The complainants have received telephone calls from subjects claiming to be employees of Potomac Edison. The subjects then tell the victims that they owe money on their electric bill and that their electric will be shut off by the end of the day. The victims are instructed to buy a pre paid Green Dot money card for a specific amount. The victim then calls a telephone number back and gives the card number allowing the money to be taken out.
If anyone receives a similar telephone call they are asked to contact Potomac Edison to verify their account status. It is not a common practice for Potomac Edison to instruct their customers to purchase money cards to pay for their account.
Citizens are encouraged to contact the Frederick Police Department to report any suspicious telephone calls/activities by calling 301-600-2102.
