Responding officers located an adult male victim with a significant knife wound to his neck. The victim was transported to Meritus Medical Center Trauma Unit for treatment of his injuries. The victim was later released but sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene to begin an investigation into the incident. Det. Alston was assigned as the lead investigator in this case. Det. Alston was able to locate a nearby apartment building where the assault occurred.
Det. Alston identified the suspect in this case as, Jose Mejia-Acostas. The subsequent investigation revealed that Mejia-Acostas and the victim were inside of an apartment with known associates when a fight occurred. During this fight, Mejia-Acostas attacked a female with a knife attempting to stab the female in the face. During this fight the stabbing victim attempted to intervene to prevent Mejia-Acostas from causing injury to other people in the residence. Eventually, the apartment resident was able to force everyone out of the apartment into the stairwell of the apartment building.
As the victim was walking down the steps of the stairwell to exit the building, Mejia-Acostas approached him from behind, placed his arm and hand around the neck of the victim, and cut the victim’s throat. Mejia-Acostas then fled from the scene.
Det. Alston applied for a statement of charges on Mejia-Acostas charging him in the assault. A District Court Commissioner issued an arrest warrant charging Mejia-Acostas with attempted first degree murder and the associated charges below. Detectives immediately began searching for Mejia-Acostas with negative results.
Information was obtained that Mejia-Acostas fled Maryland. Frederick Police Detectives worked with the Maryland State Police Fugitive Apprehension Team and the United States Marshalls Service in an attempt to locate Mejia-Acostas. On Monday, 04/21/2014, agents with the United States Marshalls Service located Mejia-Acostas in Elizabeth, NJ and took him into custody without incident.
Mejia-Acostas is currently in custody in Essex County, NJ awaiting extradition back to the state of Maryland.
