DAYTIME CLOSURES OF SOUTH STREET SCHEDULED THIS WEEKEND IN FREDERICK FOR BRIDGE PAINTING

(November 7, 2013) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) advises motorists in Frederick that South Street will be closed between the eastbound I-70 ramp and Monocacy Boulevard between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, November 9, and Sunday, November 10. The daytime closures will allow crews to paint the new I-70 bridges over South Street during the warmer temperatures necessary for painting.

During the closure, detours will direct traffic as follows:

- Southbound traffic on South Street will turn right at Monocacy Boulevard, then left on
MD 85, then take eastbound I-70 to the South Street exit (exit 55).
- Northbound traffic on Reich’s Ford Road/South Street will get on eastbound I-70, take exit 56 to MD 144 (Patrick Street) and keep right on the ramp to MD 144 west, then turn left onto Monocacy Boulevard and right onto South Street.

Drivers on westbound I-70 wishing to access Reichs Ford Road may use the MD 85 interchange
(exit 54) to return to I-70 headed east, then take exit 55 to South Street/Reichs Ford Road.

The new I-70 bridges over South Street were constructed as part of a $45 million project that widened I-70 with a third through-lane and auxiliary lane in each direction between the MD 144 and MD 85/East Street interchanges. The new westbound lanes opened October 5 and the new eastbound lanes opened October 19.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
