New Cell Phone and Seat Belt Laws take effect on October 1, 2013
Motorists should be aware of the new Cell Phone and Seatbelt Laws taking effect on October 1, 2013. Maryland Law now prohibits the use of a handheld cell phone while driving. You must use a hands free device for your cell phone while driving your vehicle. This is now a primary offense, Police can stop and ticket drivers for using a handheld cell phone while operating their vehicle. This change in the law is to educate the motoring public about a leading cause of crashes. Distracted driving accounts for approximately 30,000 injuries per year in Maryland. Cell phone use is a leading cause of crash injuries along with other forms of distracted driving. Please "Park Your Phone" before you drive.
Also starting on October 1, 2013 is a new requirement that all passengers in all seats of the motor vehicle be seat belted. Under the new law the driver and both front and back seat passengers must wear seatbelts. Please help lower traffic injuries and deaths in Maryland by buckling up when in your vehicles.
