[ARCHIVED] Downtown Arrests

FPD makes 115 arrests downtown through focused efforts on concerns of businesses/residents during 2011

The Frederick Police Department continues our efforts to effectively partner with our community and strategically address crime and disorder issues across the City. This organized, effective, strategic, and cohesive approach has resulted in continued crime decreases in the City. Inherent to that process is communication with our residents and businesses, constant crime analysis, and strategic deployment of personnel and resources.

Businesses and residents along Carroll Creek and parts of South Market Street expressed concerns about disorder, drug activity, and drunkenness in the area. FPD implemented a specific plan to address these concerns and increased focused police presence which included bike patrol, segway patrol, foot patrol, and plain clothes patrol. In the last 10 months, FPD officers have made 115 arrests in an approximate one block area directionally from Carroll Creek for a variety of offenses. The FPD will continue these enforcement efforts and urges residents and businesses to call the police and “say something when they see something.” The FPD also continues to work closely with alcohol establishments in the area and asks that they follow all related liquor laws. Establishments are expected to monitor noise and sound issues and service of alcohol. Violations of alcohol ordinances will continue to be forwarded to the Frederick County Liquor Board. In addition to enforcement, the FPD and the City continue to work on problem solving approaches, which include but are not limited to addressing the needs of the homeless, passing out free skate passes for the Hill Street Skate Park, looking at alternative skate park locations, and increasing cameras and lighting, and is assessing applicable city ordinances. The Frederick Police Department participates with several community groups to effectively find solutions across the city. As part of this partnership with the community, the Frederick Police Department attends monthly Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) meetings, has assigned corporals and sergeants to each NAC, as well as participates in meetings with the Downtown Business Partnership. We encourage all residents and business owners to participate in these meetings in order to remain fully up to date concerning issues we all share and effectively participate in the long term problem solving process. To learn more about the Neighborhood Advisory Council process please go to the City of Frederick website.

We appreciate the outstanding support of our residents and businesses and we will continue these productive partnerships and effective law enforcement.
