At approximately 9:15 pm on 4/21/13, officers from the Frederick Police Department responded to a collision in the area of Yellow Springs Road and Old Farm Dr involving a bicycle. The bicyclist, who had been riding in a group, was struck by a motor vehicle traveling in the same direction. The cyclist was transported to FMH with non- life threatening injuries.
The Frederick Police Department is asking that motorist take extra care during this time of year with the increase in bicycle traffic on our roadways. Not only are cyclists more difficult to see, but they move at far slower speeds than motor vehicle traffic. Give cyclists extra room by changing lanes if possible.
Cyclists are asked to utilize safety equipment as required by law. Proper lighting, reflectors, and reflective clothing help to ensure you are seen by drivers. Cyclists are bound to follow the same traffic laws as motorists when traveling on roadways.
Remember that sharing the road is a two-way street and safety is the responsibility of all that use our roadways. The use of our roads by different vehicles requires patience and courtesy by motorist and cyclists. For more safety tips and information on the laws in Maryland, please visit www.roads.maryland.gov.
