Nationally Known Expert on Homelessness to Speak in Frederick
Discussion Will Outline How Community Collaboration is the Basis for Success

Frederick, MD -- Dean Klein, Director of the Office to Prevent and End Homelessness in Fairfax County, Virginia, will be the next guest speaker in People Building Frederick’s Future (PBFF) 2013 Educational Series. PBFF will be teaming up with Frederick’s Coalition for the Homeless to present another in its series of programs designed to profile successful community-development programs. The lecture will be held on Monday, April 29th at 7:00 PM in the Boardroom of City Hall located at 101 North Court Street in Frederick, Maryland. Doors will open at 6:30 PM.

Mr. Klein will outline how Fairfax County’s successful efforts have become part of a national movement of communities working together to find permanent homes for 100,000 of the country’s individuals and families that are most vulnerable and chronically homeless. Marshaling the forces of government agencies, faith-based communities, businesses and nonprofit partners, the campaign called “100,000 Homes”, seeks to provide housing, counseling, treatment and other services aimed at helping people stay off the streets permanently. Supported by a broad base of national and local partners, the campaign is fundamentally altering the response to homelessness by giving communities concrete tools that work and connecting them to like-minded advocates across the country. This campaign is designed to create permanent solutions to what many seem as an intractable concern.

In his current position, Mr. Klein oversees the development and implementation of the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness. Before his appointment by the Fairfax Board of Supervisors in March 2009, Mr. Klein served as Senior Community Relations Manager at the Freddie Mac Foundation, the Metropolitan DC area's largest corporate philanthropic funder. Mr. Klein came to the Foundation from Doorways for Women and Families in Arlington, VA where he was Executive Director and oversaw all operations for the organization including a safehouse for domestic violence, an emergency shelter for families who are homeless, a Thrift Store, and transitional housing for families. Mr. Klein also served for six years as Executive Director of Shelter House overseeing this organization and serving families who are homeless in Fairfax County. Mr. Klein earned an MSW degree from Howard University.

Frederick’s Coalition for the Homeless and People Building Frederick’s Future are partnering to bring this conversation to the community. The Coalition for the Homeless was established in 1983 and is the oldest local coalition working to end homelessness in Maryland. People Building Frederick’s Future is a grassroots group of Frederick residents unified by a commitment to create the highest quality of life for the entire Frederick community, current and future.
