Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service

Frederick, MD -- The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Corporation for National and Community Service announced the first ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service to be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The goal of this day is to highlight the impact of national service and thank individuals serving in AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs across the country.

“We are excited about this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the value of National Service in The City of Frederick as we recognize the first Mayors’ Day of Recognition for National Service. I am very proud to say that my daughter, Melissa Campbell, served in AmeriCorps while attending Frostburg State University. On Tuesday, April 9th, I will join over 700 Mayors across the nation to recognize the importance of National Service in our community and to also recognize our local AmeriCorps volunteers,” said Mayor Randy McClement.

Mike Spurrier, Director of the Frederick Community Action Agency said, “The Frederick Community Action Agency not only benefits from our AmeriCorps partnership with Hood College, but also from a similar partnership with Frostburg State University. Frostburg State University hosts the A STAR! AmeriCorps program and we are extremely fortunate to have three (3) wonderful AmeriCorps members currently completing 11-months of service of the Frederick Community Action Agency. The AmeriCorps members are Navarone Frank, Jatia Eppinger, and Kyle Hodum and they are doing an outstanding job by serving in the Foodbank, Transitional Shelter, and Outreach Program.”

The three (3) AmeriCorps members serving at the Frederick Community Action Agency will be recognized for their outstanding service at The City of Frederick Workshop meeting on Wednesday, April 10th at 3:00 PM in the Boardroom in City Hall.

In Frederick, AmeriCorps members and other volunteers assist our community in addressing important community needs through direct service and building the capacity of non-profits to better meet the needs of the populations they serve. For the past several years, Hood College, through the Maryland-DC Campus Compact network, has received a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member, Ms. Monique Sledd, who has built a partnership with the Frederick Community Action Agency to fight poverty in our City, simultaneously providing real-life learning opportunities for college students to become civically engaged and increase their likelihood of completing their education.

Additional partnerships in Frederick County that host A STAR! AmeriCorps members are the Asian American Center of Frederick, the Religious Coalition, Boys & Girls Club of Frederick and Big Brother Big Sisters.
