The City of Frederick Set to Celebrate Earth Hour

Frederick, MD -- In celebration of Earth Hour, The City of Frederick will be turning off the courtyard lights in front of City Hall from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday, March 23, 2013. This is a global event that helps to spotlight how much energy we use in our everyday lives. The City of Frederick is asking that you consider turning off some lights for this hour in celebration of Earth Hour.

Mayor Randy McClement said, “Earth Hour is an event in which millions of Americans will turn out their lights for one hour in support of action on climate change and toward creating a cleaner, safer and more secure future. This energy conservation event is designed to bring awareness to each community by turning off the lights at local landmarks. I urge everyone to join with us and volunteer to safely turn out lights on March 23 from 8:30 - 9:30 PM in support of Earth Hour.”

In addition to turning off the lights for that hour, the Green Initiative Team will be in the courtyard in front of City Hall at 101 North Court Street with a pledge board to encourage citizens to come by and make a written pledge to help conserve resources. Thousands (millions!) of small actions add up to a greener world. What can you pledge to do in honor of earth hour? For your written pledge, you will receive a glow necklace in recognition of your pledge.

If you cannot make the Earth Hour event, the pledge board will be in the lobby of City Hall from March 18 to March 22. The public is encouraged to come in early and make their pledge.

Pledges could range from taking shorter showers, taking public transportation, unplugging your cell phone adapter or other creative ways to save resources.
