[ARCHIVED] 2012 Crime Stats

The Frederick Police Department (FPD) is releasing statistics from its Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for reported Part I offenses during 2012.

The Frederick Police Department (FPD) is releasing statistics from its Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for reported Part I offenses during 2012. Part I crimes are those reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as part of the Uniform Crime Reporting System. There was an overall 8.7% increase in reported Part 1 offenses within the City of Frederick for 2012 as compared to 2011. However, 2011 was a very low year for reported Part 1 offenses in Frederick. The number of Part 1 offenses has remained fairly consistent over the past five (5) years, and continues to decrease as compared to population growth.

The Part 1 offense category of Aggravated Assault, (249 reported versus 194 in 2011), contained the most significant number increase in violent crime from last year. Although this is a significant increase from 2011, it is under the five (5) year average of 279 reported offenses.

The most significant property crime increase involved theft of motor vehicles. There were 127 reported in 2012 versus 78 in 2011. Of the 127 stolen auto reports in 2012, 42 were motor scooters. The October 1, 2012 law that requires the registration of motor scooters and the wearing of a helmet during their operation should have an impact on this crime category. The FPD continues to emphasize through Community Crime Notifications ways for citizens to make themselves less likely to be a victim of this crime. Vehicle owners should make sure that they lock their vehicle doors and that they not leave spare car keys inside of the vehicle.

The FPD has tracked overall Part 1 offenses since 1991. In looking at the statistics over that time frame, the crime rate continues to drop, in context with an increasing population. The below chart shows actual Part I crime numbers since 1991. The 2012 total reported Part I offenses (2280) remained well below the average number of Part 1 crimes (2468) captured since 1991.

Chief Thomas Ledwell commends the outstanding men and women of the Frederick Police Department, both civilian and sworn, for their continued exemplary work. He would also like to recognize the unwavering support from our residents, which continues to help the FPD effectively combat crime in Frederick. Chief Ledwell stated, “The Department remains committed to crime reduction. We will employ crime reduction strategies in line with best practices, and will work with our partner law enforcement agencies and our citizens to provide an environment in Frederick where citizens have the highest quality of life. The Department will address crime through on-going enforcement efforts, data analysis, effective problem solving strategies, and responsive community policing initiatives.”
