Karen Lewis Young, President Pro Tem of the Board of Aldermen, is serving her first term as Alderman for the City of Frederick. She received designation as the City liaison to the Containment Laboratory Community Advisory Committee, Fort Detrick Alliance, Historical Society of Frederick County Board of Directors, and appointed member of the following City bodies: Carroll Creek Task Force, Community Action Agency Board of Directors, Purchasing Committee, Retirement Plan Committee, and Streets and Sanitation Committee. Ms. Young has also been an active member of the County/Municipal Synergies Committee. She is a Graduate Fellow of the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance, a graduate of the Citizen's Police Academy and a graduate of Leadership Frederick County.
Ms. Young is currently an at-large member of the Maryland Municipal League (MML) Board of Directors, member of the MML Legislative Committee, and Chair of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) Board of Directors. In addition, she was chosen to serve on several MWCOG bodies: Air Quality Committee (Vice-Chair), Board Executive Committee, Executive Director Search Committee, Employee Compensation and Benefits Review Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, and 2013 Legislative Task Force; and, selected to be the MWCOG Representative on the Maryland Department of the Environment Air Quality Control Advisory Council.
With over 30 years of management experience in the financial services industry, Ms. Young has had progressively increasing levels of responsibility. As Director of Card Member Services for American Express, she managed the interface relationship between the Card and Travel Divisions, which held responsibility for the service delivery to card members in 2500 Travel Service Offices. Ms. Young came to Frederick in 1996 as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Farmers and Mechanics National Bank. She holds a BA from Franklin and Marshall College, as well as both an MA in American History and an MBA from Columbia University. Ms. Young is extremely active in the community and has served as a volunteer or board member to over 16 civic organizations. She is married to State Senator Ron Young (District 3), former Mayor of The City of Frederick
